Max is out with his pregnant wife Lina when he receives an unpleasant phone call: his grandfather wants to see him briefly before he is picked up. Reluctantly and only with some persuasion from his girlfriend does Max comply with the request. When Max enters his grandfather’s house alone, it becomes clear that a past that still lingers today seems to separate the two of them. The grandfather gives his grandson a surprising gift: a five-kilogram gold bar that he has stored in a safe in his closet. Max is asked to think about the origin of the valuable object. After a few minutes, nothing is as it was: the visit to his grandfather becomes a moral test for Max. In a conversation between Max, Lina and his grandfather, the viewer is finally made fully aware of the origin of the gold: The grandfather was a guard at the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp. The gold comes from the valuables and dentures that were stolen from the murdered concentration camp inmates. Later, Max’s grandfather, his parents and Max himself benefited from this inheritance. At the end of the film, the grandfather leaves the house with his lawyer to show himself responsible in court for his actions at the time. The movie closes with the grandfather’s words. „I did my job there!“
